What it is

BallonsTranslator is a deep-learning-assisted manga translation tool that supports one-click machine translation and simple image/text editing. BallonsTranslator supports Japanese manga and American comics. The AOT inpainting model in BallonsTranslator comes from manga-image-translator.

Main features

  1. Image editing supports mask editing and an inpainting brush.

  2. Text editing supports find and replace across full text, source text and translated text, as well as importing and exporting word documents.

  3. In one-click machine translation, the fill-back of translated text refers to an estimate of the source typesetting, including color, outline, angle, orientation and alignment.

  4. On computers with an Nvidia graphics card or Apple silicon, GPU acceleration is enabled by default.

Getting started

  1. The install script installs BallonsTranslator in the execution directory.

  2. Starting the program checks the core dependencies.

  3. On the first run, configure the source and target languages, open a folder containing images, then click Run and wait for the translation to finish.

  4. The parameters of each automation module are configured in the settings panel.

  5. A/D or pageUp/Down turns pages, and the current page is saved automatically if it is unsaved.

Who it is for

The final result depends on the overall performance of the four modules: text detection, recognition, text erasing and machine translation. Chinese sentence breaking is based on pkuseg. Vertical layout for Japanese-to-Chinese translation is still to be improved.

Third-party input methods may cause a display bug in the right-side edit box. Text detection temporarily supports only Japanese and English. Google Translate has closed its service in China.

The Sugoi translator is for Japanese-to-English only. BallonsTranslator supports two versions of an OpenAI-compatible translator. Patchmatch is a non-deep-learning algorithm and the algorithm behind the PS inpainting brush.

Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y undo and redo most operations, but the undo/redo stack is cleared after turning pages. Ctrl+F searches the current page and Ctrl+G searches globally. Ctrl++/- or the mouse wheel zooms the canvas.

Dragging a rectangle with the left mouse button erases the text inside it, and dragging with the right button clears the inpainting result inside it.
